We were deeply saddened to learn of the passing of the extraordinary Alfred Brendel a few days ago. While we’ve taken some time to reflect on his immense legacy, we couldn’t let this moment pass without paying tribute to one of the true giants of the classical music world.
Alfred Brendel was not only one of the greatest pianists of the 20th and 21st centuries, but also a towering intellectual force — a writer, poet, and thinker who brought profound insight to every note he played. Renowned for his interpretations of Beethoven, Mozart, Schubert, Brahms and Liszt, his recordings and writings have shaped generations of musicians and listeners alike.
In 2018, we had the honour of welcoming Alfred to the Leeds International Piano Competition, where he gave a memorable talk on Mozart to our competitors and guests. Ever the gentleman, he was courteous, gracious, and remarkably generous with his time. He spoke with humour and wisdom, sharing his deep love for music and encouraging the younger generation to pursue it with integrity, curiosity and heart. He had a genuine love for young musicians and could so often be found in the audience, listening intently as new stars emerged.
Speaking on behalf of the whole Leeds International Piano Competition, CEO Fiona Sinclair said:

Alfred Brendel was a true original — a pianist of rare depth, a philosopher of music, and an enduring inspiration to all who were lucky enough to hear him or meet him. We were privileged to have him join us in 2018, and his presence left an indelible impression on everyone here. Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones at this sad time, and we join the global music community in mourning his loss and celebrating the extraordinary legacy he leaves behind.
We send our heartfelt condolences to Alfred’s family, friends, and all those who were touched by his remarkable life and artistry.
