Harmonising Communities: The Leeds International Piano Competition Unveils New Bradford Piano Trail

Ahead of the historic first Final to be held in Bradford of the world’s most famous music competition in September 2024, The Leeds International Piano Competition in collaboration with Bradford BID and Bradford City Council today launches the Bradford Piano Trail [23 March 2024].

Building on the success of the acclaimed Leeds Piano Trail – which has brought beautifully decorated pianos to more than nine permanent notable locations across the city for anyone to play – the first two locations in Bradford are unveiled today at the Kirkgate Shopping Centre and the Broadway Shopping Centre, with more venues and pianos to be added through the year.

The Award-winning Leeds Piano Trail stands as a testament to the transformative power of music within our communities. Placing public pianos in urban spaces around the city and inviting people of all ages and backgrounds to play them, has enabled ordinary individuals to express themselves through music. Among the remarkable stories that exemplify the power of the Leeds Piano Trail is that of a young Ukrainian refugee who found a place to practise thanks to the Leeds Piano Trail, ultimately securing a fully funded place at the Yorkshire School of Music. Another inspiring tale features Lucy, the 14-year-old pianist who is blind and neuro-divergent whose captivating performance on a public piano at Leeds Train Station stole the nation’s hearts when she won Channel 4’s The Piano. Now, as the renowned Piano Trail expands to Bradford, it brings with it the promise of further enriching the cultural fabric of our communities.

Throughout 2024, the trail will offer an array of programming, including free piano lessons, concerts, workshops, and days of play. With additional venues and pianos set to be introduced, the Bradford Piano Trail promises to enrich local communities and touch hearts with the power of music.

Fiona Sinclair, CEO of The Leeds said: “Over the past three years, we’ve had the joy of witnessing the power of public pianos and to discover the incredible stories behind the players. Not only do they offer a place of refuge for those wanting to take a break to stop and listen, but they also give an opportunity to the individuals of Leeds who want to express themselves and showcase their talents. We are delighted to be able to extend this experience into Bradford, we hope to foster deeper connections within the Bradford community, engage new audiences with our shared passion for the piano and help to nurture local talent.”

The Concerto Finals of The Leeds International Piano Competition with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra take place at St George’s Hall Bradford on 20 and 21 September.
