Eric Lu wins the 19th International Chopin Piano Competition

We are thrilled to celebrate the outstanding achievement of our 2018 Gold Medallist, Eric Lu, who has just been awarded First Prize at the 19th International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw — one of the world’s most revered musical contests.

Eric’s artistry has captivated audiences and juries alike since his triumph at The Leeds International Piano Competitionin 2018, where his playing was praised for its poetic depth, sensitivity and command. His victory at Leeds marked the start of an extraordinary international career — one that continues to flourish on the most prestigious stages.

As part of his Leeds prize, Eric joined Warner Classics, became a Steinway Artist, and embarked on an international tour performing at Wigmore Hall, the BBC Proms, and with major orchestras including the Chicago Symphony Orchestra under Riccardo Muti. He has since appeared across Europe, Asia and the US, and has stepped in for legendary pianists such as Martha Argerich and Nelson Freire — always with the quiet poise and musical integrity that have become his hallmark.

Eric was also selected as a BBC New Generation Artist (2019–2022), continuing his close connection to the BBC and to Leeds, where our partnership with the BBC remains central to our mission of discovering and nurturing the world’s most exceptional young pianists.

Now, following his triumph in Warsaw, Eric embarks on a major international concert tour with the other laureates of the Chopin Competition — performing in some of the world’s great concert halls and sharing his extraordinary artistry with audiences across continents.

Fiona Sinclair, CEO of The Leeds said: “Since the very first note, we have seen the power of Eric’s musicianship shine through the voice of Chopin’s music. I have been deeply moved by every performance he has given, but those that remain most vivid in my memory are his interpretations of the Chopin Sonatas and Preludes, which he later went on to record for Warner Classics. It comes as no surprise that the esteemed jury of the Chopin Competition has recognised him with this accolade — affirming his place as one of the great Chopin interpreters of his generation.”

His success in Warsaw is a moment of immense pride — for Eric, for his mentors and supporters, and for everyone at The Leeds who has followed his remarkable journey. We are honoured to have played a part in his artistic development and delighted to see his artistry recognised on the highest international stage.

Congratulations, Eric — your Leeds family is cheering you on!
