MOZART  Piano Concerto No. 23, K488 Listen
SHOSTAKOVICH  Symphony No. 8 Listen

Leeds International Piano Competition 2018 winner Eric Lu returns to the hall in which he won the prestigious competition to perform Mozart’s Piano Concerto No 23.

A highlight of this concerto is an original cadenza that features impressive virtuosic passages, and expressive music, which expands the concerto’s thematic material in simple yet ingenious ways.

Also on the programme is Symphony No 8 by Shostakovich, one of his most profound and emotional works. Written in 1943, the piece reflects the tragic intensity of war and includes some of the composer’s most terrifying and powerful music. In typically cryptic fashion the composer summed up its message in just three words; ‘life is beautiful’.

Eric comments: “Leeds will always have a very special place in my heart, so I am greatly looking forward to returning in January. The Mozart Piano Concerto is among that composer’s most beautiful and it will be wonderful to play it at Leeds Town Hall and to work with The Hallé again.”
