Friends of the Competition

Chairman of the Friends Nick Brown with Dame Fanny Waterman and Noriko Ogawa

The Friends of the Leeds International Piano Competition started in 1967 and is a registered charity which exists to support the Competition itself, which is a separately registered charity.

We provide some financial support, the opportunity for individual involvement at the time of the Competitions and, in addition, maintain interest in the Competition through recitals and social events. Many former winners and finalists have returned to give recitals for us.

Most of all we are proud to belong to an institution of world class stature which has encouraged so many talented young musicians and launched such pianists as Perahia, Vogt and Lupu onto world concert platforms and international reputations.
